Banko-yaki is a well-known ceramic style and one of Japan's six old kilns, established in 1736 in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. Banko teapots are fired in a reduction kiln, a method that allows very limited oxygen into the kiln. The clay used for Banko teapots contains a high amount of iron. In the reduction kiln, the mineralparticularly the ironinside the clay changes to blue. After firing is complete, the fired teapots are exposed to the atmosphere when the kiln door is opened, and the surface of the teapots is slightly oxidized. The oxidized iron has a reddish color, and when the blue color mixes with this reddish color, the teapots appear purple. The iron and tea tannins undergo a chemical reaction that makes the tea mild. The more you use it, the more it brings out the flavor of green tea.
